Nelson, New Zealand
Vacancy 30646

Are you ready to lead a dynamic and successful science group in one of New Zealand’s leading research organisations?

Do you want to support growth of the New Zealand seafood sector through the delivery of high quality research?

Plant & Food Research is a vibrant research organisation focussing on the application of high quality science and technology within New Zealand’s horticultural and seafood industries. Our 900+ staff, spread across 15 New Zealand locations, are proud of the way our science and commercialisation supports the production of top quality, sustainably-produced foods and high-value products.

Our Seafood Technologies portfolio aims to maximise the value of New Zealand’s seafood resources, developing new technologies for the sustainable harvest, production and processing of high value marine products. The Seafood Production Group carries out a diverse range of research focusing on physiology-based harvesting, handling and storage technologies, finfish culture and husbandry technologies, breeding and genomics of new aquaculture species, and alternate finfish production systems. Our seafood science is exciting, innovative and driven by a dedicated and passionate team of science and support staff.

Plant & Food Research’s recent decision to invest significantly in the next phase of development for our open ocean aquaculture technology concept presents a unique and exciting opportunity to lead a substantial, fully-funded programme. You will enable a dynamic multi-disciplinary team of experienced researchers to deliver high impact research and technology across this and many other programmes. Dividing your time between science leadership, developing and implementing strategy, securing funding and problem solving, you will have a pivotal role in identifying and advancing innovative approaches for transforming the seafood sector. The role will see you apply a comprehensive knowledge of relevant research and technology, encourage collaboration and develop strong linkages with stakeholders, while ensuring timely delivery of high quality science outputs and fostering a high-performing, collegial and dynamic group culture.

With a postgraduate qualification, preferably a PhD, and proven leadership ability you will combine a strong record of achievement in a relevant science area, including developing and leading high impact research programmes, with outstanding customer relationship and people management abilities.

This position is based at our new, state-of-the-art facility in Nelson, one of New Zealand’s sunniest and most beautiful regions.
