Funds await projects on sustainability

The funding will support projects geared towards enhancing opportunities and increasing market value for sustainably sourced, high-quality fish and seafood products from Atlantic Canada.

One beneficiary, the Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association Inc, will invest in two real-time monitoring buoys equipped with a suite of sensors that will collect data from the Passamaquoddy Bay that will assist the aquaculture industry and fisheries.

The Atlantic Fisheries Fund will continue to invest in projects over the next seven years. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) says proposals are welcome for funding, including innovative projects geared toward the sustainability of the fish and seafood sector; infrastructure, including equipment, new technologies and processes; or Science partnerships that enhance knowledge and understanding of the impacts of changing oceanographic conditions and sustainable harvesting technology.

Rick Doucet, minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries in New Brunswick says demand for New Brunswick’s seafood “is at an all-time high.” “We will continue to work with our aquaculture and fisheries sectors to find new ways to thrive, generate jobs and contribute to our economy,” he said.
