Cyr Couturier awarded King Charles III Coronation Medal

Cyr Couturier, an aquaculture scientist at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for exceptional service to community, province, and country. 

The medal is administered by the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall. To be awarded, candidates must have made a significant contribution to Canada or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada, and be alive on May 6, 2023.

Couturier completed his graduate studies in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University in 1986. He has several years of experience in applied research, project development, teaching, and extension services in the aquaculture and fisheries sectors. 

He has mentored many graduate diploma students in aquaculture, over 200 junior and high school students in aquaculture programs and hundreds of fish and shellfish farmers around the globe.

“Cyr Couturier has been a driving force in aquaculture science and education for over 35 years. As chair of aquaculture programmes at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, his research has advanced sustainable farm production, environmental management, and industry best practices,” said David Wells, senator for Newfoundland and Labrador.

“His impact extends well beyond Newfoundland and Labrador. Cyr has worked in over 18 countries, leading trade missions, technology transfers, and initiatives that support food security and sustainable development. His leadership in professional organizations and dedication to mentorship have shaped the next generation of aquaculture experts. For his contributions to science, education, and sustainability, Cyr Couturier is truly deserving of the King Charles III Coronation Medal,” Wells concluded.
